With the appearance of the Corvette C5 General Motors decided to set up a work team and most of all sports car races, but especially at the prestigious 24-hour race at Le Mans to participate. Started in 1998 the development of the production-based racing car, the one of the most successful GT race car should be at all. 
In 2003, the Corvette racing team convinced with several class victories in the American Le Mans Series. How good was the coordination and preparation of the 610-hp C5-Rs, the so-called 50th-Anniversary Edition was in dark blue paint at Le Mans.

Number 50 secured the 2nd place in the GTS class,  driven by Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins and Oliver Gavin. 
followed by the C5-R with starting number 53rd diven by  Ron  Fellows, J. O'Connell and Frank Freon.
